Councillor Len Ironside CBE

From: Aberdeen, Scotland

Former European Lightweight Champion, Former Scottish Welterweight Champion, Former Commonwealth Lightweight Champion

Aberdeen wrestling great Len is a firm supporter of WrestleZone, and can often be found sitting ringside at events watching the stars of today entertain the wrestling fans. Before Len became a Councillor, he was a champion wrestler during the glory years of British wrestling. After retiring from the ring in the early 90s, trading his battles inside the squared circle for ones in the debating chamber, Len has gone on to be a pillar of inspiration in the North-east.

In the early part of 2014, Len took exception to the tactics that rising star Aspen Faith was resorting to in order to win his bouts. Stung by the critique, ‘The Hippie Horror’ challenged the veteran to a bout at ‘Aberdeen Anarchy 2014’ before shockingly attacking Len in front of an outraged Aberdeen crowd. Len accepted the challenge, coming out of retirement to face Faith in a ‘World of Sport Rules’ match. Even with Len’s 20 years out of the ring and a 30 year difference in age, it took yet more shady tactics by Aspen to pick up the victory by two falls to one. However, Len would have the last word, running Faith off and then soaking up the adulation of a packed Beach Ballroom once again!

Len has recently written a book on his time in the grappling game (When You’re Ready Boys – Take Hold), and has also hosted talks about his life in the world of wrestling. This local legend continues to be a source of advice for all the young grapplers in the WrestleZone.
